Half-Life is finally making its return and it doesn’t appear to be some cash grab/tech demo. Half-Life: Alyx is Valve’s flagship VR title and looks to be one of the best and most immersive VR games out there.
With Half-Life: Alyx, Valve takes their first step into a proper VR game. The game will put you in the shoes of Gordon Freeman’s trusty sidekick, Alyx Vance, in between the events of 1 & 2 where you’ll rebel against the Combine with father Eli Vance. There will be other familiar faces returning such as the mysterious and possibly dangerous G-Man.
“Everyone at Valve is excited to be returning to the world of Half-Life,” Valve’s Gabe Newell said in a statement. “VR has energized us. We’ve invested a lot of ourselves in the technology. But we’re also game developers at heart, and to be devoting ourselves to a VR game this ambitious is just as exciting. For that to come in the form of Half-Life feels like the culmination of a lot things we care a lot about: truly great games, cutting edge technology, and open platforms. We can’t wait for people to experience this.”
You can take a look at how Valve is pushing the envelope with their VR tech in the trailer for Half-Life: Alyx below.
While this isn’t episode 3, many are hoping this could pave way for the long-fabled conclusion. Only time will tell and Valve seems to be taking this one step at a time but this is the first Valve story-based game in quite some time so the tides may be turning.
Half-Life: Alyx will release in March 2020 exclusively for VR. Valve’s Index VR headset will bundle the game in for free but you can also purchase it for $59.99 if you own an Oculus, Vive, or other PC compatible headsets.
