Halo 4 tackles the movie industry, breaks record for biggest day-one opening in U.S. box office history

Well, this ought to change the tune of those opposing a Halo movie. Following the report that Halo 4 is on track to reach $300 million in global sales in the first week alone, earning more than $220 million worldwide, Microsoft has revealed that the game has surpassed the record for the biggest day-one opening in U.S. box office history.

That's right; based on U.S. sales alone, Halo 4 is more popular than Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, as well as the biggest movie of 2012, The Avengers.

“We’re thrilled that Halo 4 has emerged as the biggest U.S. entertainment launch of the year,” said Phil Spencer, corporate vice president of Microsoft Studios. “Thanks to the millions of fans worldwide who helped make this another record-breaking launch for the Halo franchise, Halo 4 is kicking off a strong holiday season and has become the must-have blockbuster experience of the year.”

Normally I'd be against a Halo movie out of fear that Hollywood would butcher it, but based on 343 Industries' and Microsoft's handling of the web series, Forward Unto Dawn, I have some sort of renewed faith in the concept.

Additionally, the success of Halo 4 has boosted lifetime sales for the franchise beyond $3.38 billion. Great news indeed for Microsoft who has acknowledged Halo 4 to be the company's most expensive game to date.
