Halo Infinite intended as ‘platform’, No sequels planned

Hot off the wheels from today’s worldwide gameplay reveal for Master Chief’s much-anticipated next-gen appearance, we know learn more about the developer’s strategy for the franchise going forwards.

In an interview with IGN, 343 Industries Studio Head Chris Lee shared insight about Infinite and what to expect. One thing is clear, Halo Infinite will not only be the first Halo outing on the Xbox Series X. It might even be only one.

But not because the franchise is going to end. Very much the opposite is the case. In the age of live service games, Microsoft and 343 Industries have to adapt or be left in the dust. Fortnite and PUBG are the best examples of what theoretically one game can achieve. While it’s true that there is no Fortnite 2 or PUBG 2, the plethora of content updates and seasons kept these games alive and fresh for many years.

“Halo Infinite is the start of our platform for the future. We want Infinite to grow over time, versus going to those numbered titles and having all that segmentation that we had before. It’s really about creating Halo Infinite as the start of the next ten years for Halo and then building that as we go with our fans and community.” – Chris Lee via IGN

We obviously can not forget Destiny here. Not only is it the lovechild of Halo creator Bungie but it sure sounds like Halo Infinite is taking some clues from its former creators. Infinite is going to be just the starting point for the future of Halo, with technical upgrades of the likes of ray tracing alongside game content.

There was no word whether Halo Infinite is going to adopt the format of Season Passes to achieve this goal or adopt Destiny’s approach of annual massive expansions. Maybe 343 Industries will go an entirely unique route but one thing is for sure. Don’t expect a Halo Infinite 2 anytime soon in the coming years.
