HBO’s Game of Thrones will spoil the books

While the Game of Thrones series is said to be diverting from the books and carving its own path, there are some plot points from the books that the show won't be able to ignore. Up until this point the series has (mostly) gone by the books, but the series has reached the point where there are no more books.

George R.R. Martin is currently working on the sixth book of the series and it has been made clear, via the book's publisher, that The Winds of Winter won't be published in 2015. What does this mean for the HBO series — will the show spoil future plot points (like the series favorite: character deaths) or will it run along its own course?

During a panel discussion at the Oxford Union the show's screenwriters and executive producers, David Benioff and Dan Weiss confirmed that it would be a mix of both. The coming seasons will spoil upcoming events in the books, but will take its own path to those events. So far, the only difference between what the show has done and will do is that the show will be broadcasted before the books release.

In the upcoming seasons, readers will want to be wary of the show as opposed to show watchers being wary of spoiler-filled readers.

Here's the direct statement from Benioff on the issue:

Luckily, we’ve been talking about this with George for a long time, ever since we saw this could happen, and we know where things are heading. And so we’ll eventually, basically, meet up at pretty much the same place where George is going; there might be a few deviations along the route, but we’re heading towards the same destination. I kind of wish that there were some things we didn’t have to spoil, but we’re kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. The show must go on. . .and that’s what we’re going to do.
