Help fund Wasteland 2 on Kickstarter

Recently Double Fine Productions asked gamers for help with funding their prospective game, Psychonauts 2, a sequel to the 2005 platformer for Xbox, PlayStation 2, PC, and Mac. Minecraft creator Markus Persson expressed interest in assisting the developer, and donations rained in worldwide. The project on Kickstarter closed tonight with an astounding $3,335,250 raised, when the company only requested $400,000 to get the game off the ground.

Now Brian Fargo, InXile CEO and founder of developer Interplay, is encouraging gamers to show the same outpouring of support for a sequel to the post-apocalyptic RPG Wasteland, first released for the Apple II and then the Commodore 64 and IBM platforms.

"This is probably the last chance for a Wasteland sequel," the Kickstarter page reads. "We have tried to pitch this game multiple times to game publishers, but they’ve balked. They don’t think there’s any interest in a solid, old school type of game … This is our shot at proving them wrong."

If the campaign is successful, original co-designers Alan Pavlish and Mike Stackpole will return to work on the game. Composer Mark Morgan and video game designer Jason Anderson—along with other writers, designers, and composers who worked on the Fallout games—will contribute to the game, as well.

Why the Fallout connection? Some considered the first Fallout to be an unofficial sequel to Wasteland, and it's not surprising considering the developer: Interplay Entertainment, formerly Interplay Productions, which made the RPG back in 1988. Interplay is, as most gamers know, no longer attached to the Fallout brand.

So far the Wasteland 2 Kickstarter has gained over 6,000 backers and $391,251 out of the needed $900,000. The fundraiser concludes on April 17.
