Here’s John Smedley’s first game since leaving Daybreak Game Company

It sounds pretty interesting...

Months after leaving Daybreak Games Company (forermly Sony Online Entertain [SOE]), John Smedley is finally ready to reveal his new venture. While we new the former president of SOE would be starting his own company, details remained a mystery.

Today, we can confirm John Smedley's new studio is Pixelmage Games. The company also revealed their first game today, a 2D pixel art action RPG called "Hero's Song." Though still early in development, Hero's Song is shaping up as a open world rogue-like fantasy game in which you'll create "epic fantasy worlds uniquely shaped by your chocies,t he power of the gods, and thousands of years of history." The game can be played as a single-player experience or with thousands of other players on your own server (with up to hundreds playing at one time).

“Our goal with Pixelmage Games is to make extremely deep and hardcore games in a beautiful pixel art style with an incredibly deep multiplayer experience” said John Smedley, CEO of Pixelmage Games. “We’re calling on the community to be a part of this project as we create a really unique game that we’re sure fantasy RPG fans will really enjoy.”

Pixelmage have taken to Kickstarter to fund the game, asking for $800,000 to help complete that game that has already secured $1 million from private investors. Backers can choose to pledge anywhere from $25 to $10,000, depending what incentives they want. The developers from the game are largely from SOE and have worked on EverQuest (1 & 2), Planetside (1 & 2), Shadowrun, H1Z1 and more.
