If you've been on the internet long enough, odds are you've come across a reference to either Tommy Wiseau or The Room — the film written by, directedy by and starred in by Tommy Wiseau. It's considered one of the worst movies ever made, and that's because it is. It's a freaking mess in every way a film could be messy. But it's so bad, it's funny, and over the years it has gained a cult following.
It's like when you're passing by a really bad car crash, but you can't help but stare.
For a while now, we've known that James Franco is directing and starring in The Disaster Artist, which is based on the 2013 book by Tom Bissell that tells the story of the troubled development and production of The Room. As I said, James Franco is directing it and starring as Tommy Wiseau, but the cast is quite robust. It also stars Dave Franco as Greg Sestero, Seth Rogen, Josh Hutcherson, Hannibal Burress, Ari Graynor, Jacki Weaver, and Kate Upton.
Yesterday, Franco shared a post on Instagram of the start of production, showing himself as Wiseau and his brother Dave as Sestero. And damn, they look just like the characters they're playing.
If you've never seen The Room, it's about a love triangle between Johnny, his bride-to-be Lisa and his best friend Mark. Instead of trying to describe it, you can watch the trailer for The Room below.
There is currently no release date for The Disaster Artist, but it couldn't come soon enough.
