Here’s why Super Smash Bros. 3DS, Wii U not releasing in tandem

Typically when you see a game release on multiple platforms at once, the release date it the same – no matter what platform it's coming to.

This is not the case with Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS. While the 3DS is set for release on October 3rd in North America and Europe (October 4th in Australia, September 13th in Japan) the Wii U version is scheduled for the end of 2014.

Why? Series creator, Masahiro Sakurai took to his Weekly Famitsu article to explain why.

It all comes down to bugs:

"Checking is done both domestically and overseas, so for a game like Smash Bros., several hundred people are employed." Sakurai explained. "So, debugging alone becomes a huge project. So much so that one of the biggest reasons for the separate release dates for the 3DS and Wii U versions was so that we could shift the debugging periods.

Considering not only the different fighters, but items, stages, color settings, play rules, and game modes, the number of varying combinations are astronomical. In order to properly debug, every pattern must be tried, but such a task would be impossible no matter how many decades or centuries you take."

There you have it, Sakurai and his team are working to bring you the best version of Super Smash Bros. that they can. If it means making you wait to buy it because of debugging, that's fine with them.

Are you upset that both versions aren't releasing at the same time? Let me know!
