INB4: Complaints about Spider-Man’s costume in Captain America: Civil War

By now, you’ve probably seen the new Captain America: Civil War trailer that dropped mere hours ago. If not, check it out above!

The hype surrounding it is palpable, not just because of the exciting new footage shown for the May release, but mostly because, after months of anticipation, we finally have our first official glimpse at the Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of Spider-Man!

Reactions and speculations are pouring onto the web even as we speak, most of which is thankfully positive. While the focus of the trailer centers on the Cap vs. Stark brawl, the very end shows us our friendly neighborhood wall-crawler swinging into action with a subtle, “Hey, everyone.”

Now that we know for sure what Spider-Man’s suit will look like, there seems to be some concerns. On the whole, people seem to enjoy it, but the look of it is still raising some questions as to why this particular design came to be. It needs to be said, after the train wreck that was The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Marvel Studios needs to make sure fans are pleased with their interpretation on every level. Bearing this in mind, they made the decision to go for a more retro, classic look. The suit itself doesn’t make sense to many, but that’s because the Spider-Man that mainstream audiences associate most with today, is actually the version made popular by Spawn creator, Todd McFarlane, during his run with Marvel in the 80’s. His version had more webbing, used more aerial acrobatics, spider-like movements and poses, etc. This is the version that has evolved and become the Spider-Man we know now.

The Civil War movie suit is much more reminiscent of the original 1960’s Steve Ditko Spider-Man, the vintage look that made him a household name today. Note the slimmer eyes, less webbing, and the smaller insignia in the middle of his chest. As we zoom in, we can see the black borders around his eyes actually function with a mechanical shutter effect, allowing his mask to emote, much in the same way he was drawn in Marvel’s heyday. The design of these “underoos”, however, does have those modern day accents commonly associated with the current MCU line of costumes.

Spider-Man’s role in the movie still remains to be seen, and we have yet to find out if Stark will assemble the Iron Spider suit for him from the Civil War comics. One thing is for sure, Captain America: Civil War is finally giving us the Spider-Man we’ve been wanting since the tragic fall of the Maguire era.

Captain America: Civil War releases May 6th!
