Insurgency: Sandstorm announced for PS4, Xbox One, and PC

Insurgency is something of a modern cult classic on PC. The game is incredibly well regarded by its player base, as noted by its 91% positive user rating on Steam. As an indie game, it hasn't garnered the amount of attention that FPS games usually get year-to-year, but it has many a player pouring hundreds of hours into its more down-to-earth multiplayer gameplay. Developer New World Interactive has announced the follow-up, Insurgency: Sandstorm is currently in development and will release sometime next year for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Sandstorm will be getting a visual upgrade as the game moves over to Unreal 4, and as a result will get some technical enhancements. Here's a list of features that are currently confirmed for Insurgency: Sandstorm courtesy an official press release:

  • Expanded environment scale.
  • Light vehicles for transportation and fire support.
  • New game modes designed for vehicle gameplay.
  • Competitive matchmaking, anti-cheat, and rankings system.
  • Improved ballistics system including bullet drop and travel time.
  • Interacting with the environment by climbing ladders and door breaching.

Insurgency: Sandstorm will also be getting story modes for both 4-player co-op and single player gameplay. The campaign is described as a "road trip story" where the protagonist, a Yazidi Kurd who leaves her rebel faction to embark upon a personal quest alongside her best friend who was a captive of radical insurgents, an American combat veteran of the war in the Middle East, and a French civilian. The quartet bonds over the trials and tribulations of their journey, which focuses more on the interpersonal relationships rather than the epic scale of all out war.

Insurgency: Sandstorm will release sometime in 2018 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
