You don't often see a mainstream superhero movie get an 'R' rating, and there's a good reason for that. No, it's not because people are too sensitive, it's because you can't sell as many tickets for an 'R' rated film as you can a 'PG-13' movie due to the much broader (and frequent) audience that comes with moviegoers under 17 years old. Logan, however, does not seem to care as Director James Mangold announced over Twitter that the movie would officially be getting an 'R' rating.
Here's the tweet:
Official: Please be advised that LOGAN has been rated R for “strong brutal violence and language throughout, and for brief nudity.”
— Mangold (@mang0ld) January 23, 2017
The rating doesn't come as much of a surprise given the Alternate trailer that released back in October showing Wolverine shoving his claws through a dude's head. Couple that with the fact that the movie is taking a much bleaker tone with its setting and a dying Professor Xavier, and you've got the recipe for a tear jerker. At least as much as a superhero film can be.
Logan releases in theaters on March 3rd, 2017.
