With CinemaCon going on this week, Fox Studios ended its presentation with a pretty surprising announcement: Avatar will be getting four sequels.
Cameron announced he wants to release Avatar 2 in December of 2018 followed by three more sequels in 2020, 2021 and 2022. According to Cameron,
"I've been working the last couple of years with a team of four top screenwriters to design the world of Avatar going forward: The characters, the creatures, the environment, the new cultures. "So far, the art I'm seeing, is in pure imagination, really far beyond the first film," he added. "It's going to be a true epic saga."
The initial plan for three sequels wasn't enough according to Cameron, as he indicated that they would not be able to tell the story of Avatar in such a short period of time. With three sequels being nearly ten hours of time, and most likely more than enough to tell the history of life itself let alone the Avatar story, it seems that Fox is out to drain every penny from the Avatar well before they are done.
The original movie made $2.8 Billion worldwide and currently sits atop the the highest grossing movies of all time. It did release twice, however, which many fail to mention. The second time consisting of several extra minutes of footage, but all sales counted toward the total.
