Journey is often regarded as a critical success. A PlayStation 3 exclusive developed by indie game studio Thatgamecompany, Journey was released in March 2012.
It's well-documented that throughout development of the game, the company was forced to burn through backup resources and even went bankrupt. As the story goes, though, Journey went on to win several "game of the year" awards and received several other awards and nominations, including a Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media nomination for the 2013 Grammy Awards. Even with those accomplishments, you don't hear much about the game's commercial success.
Now, speaking with Family Gamer TV, studio co-founder Jenova Chen explained that the royalties are finally starting to come in.
"It is still hard to know, but we made the money back last year, and this year we started to see royalties coming in," Chen said. "So it seems that Journey sales are not really going away. I’m quite curious to see what happens this quarter.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Chen added that Thatgamecompany has completed its three-game contract with Sony and that its next project will be funded by venture capitalists.
