Just Dance 2 Pushes Over Five Million Units

Ubisoft’s “internal estimates” put the publisher’s Just Dance 2 for the Wii at over five million units sold worldwide.

Released on October 12, 2010 in North America, the game has gone on to unprecedented success. The franchise overall has sold an estimated 10 million units, making the Just Dance brand the third biggest worldwide in 2010. Not bad for a Wii-exclusive dance game.

“The Just Dance franchise has revitalized the video game music category with consumers worldwide joining the dance movement,” said Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Ubisoft North America. “Players of all ages are enjoying the social and physical benefits of playing Just Dance 2 as it’s truly a game that is accessible and enjoyable for everyone.”

Nintendo has pointed to Just Dance’s success as proof that third-party titles can do well on their console, but that’s like Apple saying, “Remember Angry Birds? You should make games for us too!” It’s a bit unrealistic, especially considering far more games with considerably greater potential have crash and burned on the Wii, only for their devs and publishers to swear the system off completely.

Regardless, congratulations to Ubisoft, but I’m just fine with DanceMasters on the Kinect.
