March’s free Xbox 360 Games with Gold: Civilization Revolution and Dungeon Defenders

Microsoft has revealed the two free Games with Gold titles for the month of March: Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution and Dungeon Defenders. Xbox LIVE Gold members will be able to download Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution (normally $29.99) for free on Xbox 360 starting tomorrow, March 1. It'll be available for download through March 15. On March 16, Dungeon Defends (normally $14.99) become free.

Back in January, Microsoft's Phil Spencer said he "feels good" about the Games with Gold offerings for the first half of 2014. January's offerings were a step in the right direction with Sleeping Dogs and Lara Croft and the Guardian of the Light. February wasn't too bad either with Dead Island and Toy Soldiers: Cold War. Things appear to have tapered off in March, however. It's not that these are bad games, but they aren't necessarily headliners to brag about either. They certainly pale in comparison to the games Sony is offering through PlayStation Plus. Next month, PS Plus members will six different games become available for free across Sony's three main platforms: PS4, PS3, and Vita.

What's most disheartening about today's reveal is that Microsoft has still yet to announce any free games for Xbox One. Back in November, Microsoft's Larry 'Major Nelson' Hryb confirmed that Xbox LIVE Gold members would get access to free Xbox One games; details were expected to be shared in early 2014. We're now at the end of February and though Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer said news regarding Xbox One's Games with Gold is "coming soon," we've yet to hear anything.

It's possible Microsoft is waiting for the Xbox One's lineup of games to grow before they start giving them away, but it's somewhat disconcerting that we've heard absolutely nothing on the issue. Meanwhile, PlayStation 4 owners have already enjoyed Resogun, Contrast, Don't Starve, Outlast, and soon Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition for free. Looking at both consoles' lineup of games, it's clear that Sony's commitment to indies early on has helped bolster the PS4's lineup.
