Mario & Sonic returning to the Winter Olympic Games

Nintendo's first announcement today was a game from SEGA — the latest in the Mario & Sonic series. Coming to the Wii U, the new Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games will feature "enhanced graphics" with detailed characters and environmental effects.

Nintendo showed some brief gameplay, highlighting a few new features and mini Olympic games that will be playable. In addition to the returning events like skiing and snowboarding, SEGA has added figure skating pairs and dream events, where stages are built in the world of Sonic and Mario. In these "dream events," you'll be able to perform dynamic moves not possible in real life. There is also a mixed event that combines multiple Olympic sports like skiing, snowboarding, and bobsledding all in one race.

Launch details for the new Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games will be shared at a later date.
