For many, the "real" endings of Mass Effect arrive today in the form of free DLC. Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut is now live on Xbox 360 and can be downloaded immediately.
Mass Effect 3 players can now experience the true multiple endings, the way BioWare originally boasted about the game, thanks to "additional cinematic sequences and epilogue scenes" that were removed from the final version of the game but have been included in the Extended Cut DLC.
Extended Cut isn't a re-imagining of the Mass Effect 3 endings, nor is it a new ending. Instead, it will provide "closure" to the controversial endings with a goal to give players a sense of "personalization with the endings". With that being said, BioWare warned yesterday that some fan feedback was not addressed in the add-on and
"There was some feedback that we can't address," he warned. "There are people who just outright rejected the whole concept of the endings, and wanted us to start from scratch and redo everything. And we can't do that because that's not our story, we wouldn't know how to write that story."
He also admitted that he is fully prepared for the new wave of discussion and debate, maybe even controversy, that will probably arise from the Extended Cut endings. The only question is, will it be a good debate or another debacle like the first release of Mass Effect 3?
If you are on Xbox 360, you can download the 1.85GB update and immediately start playing. PS3 and PC users might have to wait a little longer before they can experience the new endings. BioWare hasn't given exact times for the PS3 and PC release of Extended Cut, but did say it will release when "Microsoft and Sony prop all other DLCs". For Sony, that means later in the day today. For PC, they are aiming to have it up on Origin before noon Mountain Standard Time.
We'll be sure to update you once Extended Cut goes live on the remaining platforms.
