Video game movies have a lengthy history dating back several decades. Some of the most notable ones include Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider, and the more recent Assassin's Creed. The majority of video game movies are pretty bad and no one can seem to understand why they keep turning out this way but one director is going to incredible lengths to make sure that doesn't happen to his movie.
Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts sat down with GameSpot recently to talk about his Metal Gear Solid movie. This movie has been in the works for quite some time and Vogt-Roberts has spent an incredible amount of time and effort trying to make sure it's just right and accurately depicts what people love about the third-person stealth action franchise.
"I really give credit to the people I'm working with at Sony, the executives and the producers," he says. "I was able to go to them and say, 'Let's stop where we are, because I think we're heading down a direction that doesn't fully capture why people love this game, what Kojima's voice is, why people who have played this game for decades love it, why people who have never played this game will love it.' I was able to say, 'Let's really think about whether we're making the truest, most balls-to-the-wall Metal Gear version of this–the most Kojima version of this. And even if that means we make it for a little bit less money, let's make the version of this that's true to what it is, fully committed to what Kojima's voice is.'"
"So we're sort of re-working the script right now, and hopefully we get a script that they are excited about, and then get more serious about making it," he continues.
Vogt-Roberts also noted he has not spoken with Konami, the studio responsible for the Metal Gear series. For the last few years, the Metal Gear Solid series has been surrounded by controversy thanks to Konami. There was a major public fallout between the studio and MGS creator and long time collaborator Hideo Kojima. This all happened during the final main line MGS game, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and resulted in what feels like a strange unfinished product leaving many to wonder what exactly happened between the two parties.
Kojima was seemingly forced out of Konami and has since been picked up by PlayStation to work on a PS4 exclusive game titled Death Stranding. Vogt-Roberts noted that he's keen on keeping the Kojima tone in the game and has yet to meet with Konami.
"I have not dealt with Konami at all," he says. "I'm very vocal about wanting to shepherd Kojima-san's voice. And that will never be something that I stop being vocal about. Konami, I believe, does have the rights, but I've not had a single meeting with them."
On the subject of when this long awaited film will come out, the director seems unsure but would love to make it his next movie if possible.
"I would make this my next movie, [but] there are so many things that need to happen before then," he says. "We need to get a script that everyone feels good about, then we need to cast the thing, then we need–you know, there's just so many things that go into whether or not studio movies get made, the least of which is like whether a script is good or not."
Kong: Skull Island is out on Blu-Ray and DVD right now, Destiny 2 will launch on consoles next week on September 6th.
