Not to be outdone by Sony's announcement that over 2.1 million PS4 consoles have been sold since launch, Microsoft today boasted about its own console sales. And although no specific sales numbers were mentioned, Microsoft revealed that they are seeing "record breaking sales" for the Xbox One.
"With unprecedented demand, Xbox One is sold out at major retailers, with the Xbox team and retailers working around the clock to re-stock," Microsoft said.
“We are humbled and gratified by the overwhelming response from our fans to the launch of Xbox One. Eleven days in we are seeing record breaking sales and are selling every Xbox One we can make," Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President of Strategy and Marketing, added. "Demand is far exceeding supply in the 13 countries we’ve launched and we are sold out at retailers around the world. We are seeing incredible usage from our engaged fans who have purchased Xbox One with more than 50 million hours spent on Xbox One games and entertainment."
In addition to boasting about sales, Microsoft revealed some fun facts about its launch lineup of games:
"The team is working hard to meet consumer demand and we are delivering consoles to retailers as fast as possible this holiday season," Microsoft concluded. "As more and more people are looking to join the fun, it has become increasingly more challenging to find Xbox One in stores."
It's safe to say that at this stage in the game both consoles are selling tremendously well and are only being held back by production limitations. What will really determine the most successful console are sales beyond the launch period, once consumer demand doesn't so heavily outweigh the supply. I suggest taking these figures with a grain of salt as it'll be more telling after a year or so of availability.
