Microsoft has revealed their thinnest and smallest tablet yet, the Surface 3. In comparison to the Surface Pro 3, it is lighter (1.37lb vs. 1.76lb), smaller (10.8" vs. 12"), and cheaper — the Surface 3 is starts at $499, where the Surface Pro 3 starts a $799.
Unlike its predecessor, the Surface 3 will be shipping with Windows 8.1 (64-bit) which will give tablet owners the option of updating to Windows 10 for free during the first year the new operating system is available.
The base Surface 3 is priced at $499 and is equipped with 64GB, 2GB RAM and Wi-Fi (the type cover and pen are sold separately). The upgraded version is priced at $599 and comes with 128 GB, 4GB RAM and Wi-Fi. If you want to add 4G LTE to either version, tack on $100 to the price. This tablet is not designed for "professionals" or "creators," it's intended for students and families.
The Surface 3 ships on May 5th.
