A Microsoft job ad seeking an Algorithm Research & Development Engineer for the Xbox team indicates that 3D could have a vital role in the Xbox 720.
The Interactive Entertainment Business division for Microsoft calls for someone "passionate about Image processing algorithm and 3D imaging technologies."
Responsibilities include, "algorithm design and implementation into state of the art 3D imaging systems working in an integrated HW and SW leading team."
While the job doesn't specifically mention the Xbox 720, it's safe to assume Microsoft is looking towards the next-gen to implement an even better 3D system. While the Xbox 360 does somewhat support the third dimension already, it's hard to imagine any noticeable progress will be made while the Xbox 360 is still viable – however long that may be.
Rumors of Microsoft announcing the Xbox 720 are as popular as ever, with many believing some sort of next-gen console reveal could come as early as E3 this year. While Microsoft has denied plans to announce the Xbox 720, there have already been plenty of features rumored for the pending console.
Still, while this just adds to the growing list of rumored features, it's completely plausible that Microsoft's IEB team, which states a mission to "re-invent entertainment", could be looking towards 3D for the Xbox 720. Could you imagine a world in which the Xbox Kinect scans your body and allows you to play games in 3D?
