Microsoft promises Xbox One’s Kinect won’t spy on you

The Xbox One's built-in Kinect device won't be monitoring your every activity.

Microsoft assures gamers that they will be "in control of what Kinect can see and hear," according to a post on Xbox Wire.

"By design, you will determine how responsive and personalized your Xbox One is to you and your family during setup," the post reads. "The system will navigate you through key privacy options, like automatic or manual sign in, privacy settings, and clear notifications about how data is used. When Xbox One is on and you’re simply having a conversation in your living room, your conversation is not being recorded or uploaded.

You can "pause" the sensor at anytime, and after that point, the Kinect will only listen for two voice commands: "Xbox off" and "Xbox on." Microsoft says you can even disable that feature if you'd like.

Microsoft promises that personal data — videos, photos, facial expressions, heart rate, and more — won't leave your Xbox One without your permission.

The company also detailed its policies for game sharing and trading as well as its Internet connection requirements.
