Plenty of us still clearly remember standing out in the middle of the night waiting to get our mits on Microsoft’s Xbox 360. It’s a little insane to think that on the 22nd of this month that will have been 10 whole years ago.
As the Xbox One dropped nearly two years ago now, we’ve begun to witness the phase out of support for the older console. Major titles like Fallout 4, Assassin’s Creed and Star Wars Battlefront won’t even be making an appearance on the 360 (or PS3, for that matter) and even this year’s Call of Duty outing for the system lacks a campaign.
But it was a good run for the 360, even despite the disaster that was the dreaded Red Ring of Death, the initial lack of HDMI support or the fact you originally had to buy an expensive adaptor to get the thing online wirelessly. The system still managed to sell over 84 million units and its dominance in online play with Xbox Live helped to craft the culture of online console gaming that persists into the new generation of systems.
Leading the seventh gen debut, the 360 was joined by Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii consoles and saw some pretty interesting technology idea advancements like expanded hard drives and the Kinect’s motion sensing camera, all of which made it the 6th highest selling console in history.
Happy birthday, 360!
