Disaster Report was a 2002 Survival Action-adventure game created by Irem long before the Survival Game explosion that was Minecraft and its many spiritual-successors/copies/influencers. It spawned two sequels that were unfortunately Japan only and a fourth was planned for 2011 until a real-life disaster struck Japan in the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. It was ultimately canceled and laid dormant for years. Until the recent update on the team’s website stating November as a scheduled reveal.
Disaster Report was a series that started on the Playstation 2. It featured mechanics that might be considered before its time, but would seem relatively commonplace today. HP represented the characters health while QP was their energy, which could be restored with water. Companions of the main character also needed water to survive. The story involves characters on a man-made island. Of course, shortly after, disaster strikes. The goal was to move through the disaster areas of the city, find routes through dangerous areas, collect items needed for survival and much more.
Being ahead of its time, it was considered a cult classic while never really attaining global fame. It today’s world of survival games, a story-based survival game with Japanese flair could really flourish.
