Nintendo announced a new installment in the Mario Party series during today's Nintendo 3DS direct. Since Nintendo didn't have time to show off the game during the last broadcast, president Satoru Iwata took the time to discuss some of the new gameplay elements in the new Mario Party.
The same basic gameplay — rolling dice, moving along a board, and competing in mini games — are still present, but this time the game boards each have their own set of unique rules. Each board will feature unique interactions that are "very important" as you make use of a variety of items to interfere with opponents and help move yourself along.
One example provided showed a board in which you collect boosts as you play, in hopes of using them at the right moment to multiply your dice roll movement. Another example showed one board in which you have to choose to hide in safety from a missile or risk moving and getting hit.
"Gameplay changes dramatically make this a game that is easy to enjoy even if you don't have a lot of time," Iwata said. "The mini games test your speed, concentration, luck, while leveraging the unique hardware features of 3DS."
