New Vita games to be announced at Gamescom, for the five of you who own one

After a disappointing E3 showing for the Vita, Sony has vowed to unveil more games for the struggling handheld system at Gamescom this month. This comes from PlayStation EU blog manager Fred Dutton who replied, "Yes!" when asked if we'll see new Vita games at the show.

Obviously this is welcomed news by Vita owners, but unfortunately, Sony might find itself spread a bit too thin. With a slew of PS3 games still to be released, the upcoming launch of the PlayStation 4, and trying to boost a struggling Vita's sales, Sony shouldn't lose sight of what's really important — the PlayStation 4.

Sony has previously stated the PlayStation 4 will be the focus of their media event, as it should be, but their need to make all of their platforms relevant might weaken their presentation. Gamescom stands as one of the last few big spotlight moments for both Sony and Microsoft will make their pitch for next-gen consoles. Although the PS4 got off to a fast start, winning over the majority with consumer friendly policies, the Xbox One has made up quite a bit of ground thanks to Microsoft's policy reversals. Now, very little separate the two systems so Sony has to show something that makes the PS4 stand apart — whether it be games or some sort of unique tie in with the Vita.

It'll be interesting to see what Sony has planned for the Vita. Upcoming titles include Killzone: Mercenary and Tearaway, but if Sony wants to remain viable in the handheld space they'll need something more than that.

Sony's Gamescom press conference will be held on Tuesday, August 20, at 7:00pm Central European Time (1:00pm EST, 10:00am PST).
