Nightdive Studios announced via Twitter that they are working on an Enhanced Edition for one of the most important first-person action-RPGs of all time System Shock 2. The seminal horror-RPG paved the way for the immersive sim and is counted as a progenitor of other industry cult games like Deus Ex. Even EA’s horror shooter set on a derelict space station Dead Space can be traced back to System Shock 2.

As such, fans of the series and classic gaming in general are overjoyed by the announcement of System Shock 2 Enhanced Edition. There are loads of questions lingering in their minds however, as the regular System Shock 2 has been readily available on PC for years. Today’s announcement doesn’t go into detail what the enhanced edition will improve over the regular edition, so we’re eager to learn more about it.

Nightdive Studios has made a name for themselves by reinvigorating classic games and making them easily available for modern gaming audiences. And while today’s news doesn’t disclose any release platforms, we are hopeful that System Shock 2 Enhanced Edition will also come out for current consoles alongside the PC.

The timing of the enhanced edition also comes at a good time when the System Shock franchise is at the cusp of receiving its proper third title with System Shock 3. What could be a better way for prospect gamers who want to experience the entire trilogy than play the most modern rendition. The first entry is already available as System Shock Enhanced Edition on the PC via Steam & GOG, and a remake is currently in the works and planned to come out for PC and consoles.
