For the second month in a row, the Nintendo 3DS was the best-selling video game hardware platform in the United States. The 3DS handheld sold nearly 225,000 units for June 2013, according to this month's NPD Group report and a Nintendo press release.
“To quote Nintendo during E3, ‘software sells hardware’, which is evident in this month’s 3DS results," NPD wrote. "Strong double-digit increases in the 3DS hardware sales were coupled with triple-digit digit increases in software for June sales. 3DS software sales momentum is building due to a steady flow of content over the past few months, leading to positive year-to-date sales results.”
Once again the 3DS edged out the Xbox 360 as the top-selling platform for the 5-week period spanning June 2, 2013 through July 6, 2013; however, the Xbox 360 remained the top-selling console hardware platform, for the thirtieth month in a row. Yesterday, Microsoft announced that Xbox 360 sales for Q4 had dropped to 1 million compared to 1.1 million during the same period last year.
Nintendo will look to build upon this momentum with the release of several highly anticipaed 3DS titles including Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (Aug. 11), Pokémon X and Pokémon Y (Oct. 12) Mario Party for Nintendo 3DS (name not final, November) and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (November).
