Nintendo President clarifies ‘NX’ announcement

What the heck is it!?

Earlier this week, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata shocked the world when he mentioned that Nintendo is creating a new next-generation hardware concept codenamed "NX." The announcement was unexpected, to say the least, and although Iwata has already said he can't talk more about the new system — vaguely described as "a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept" — rumors and speculation continue to mount.

Looking for some official answers, Time recently asked Iwata straight-up if the NX is indeed new hardware and what it's intended to follow.

"The reason why I announced “NX,” which by the way, is not directly related to our alliance with DeNA, was because I wanted to avoid any misunderstandings such as, 'Nintendo might have lost its passion for the dedicated game system business,' and because I wanted many people to understand that Nintendo will continue its dedicated game system business with even stronger passion and motivation," he said, referring to possible misconceptions regarding Nintendo's other announcement in which they will be developing mobile smart device games featuring characters from Nintendo IP.

"I am sorry, but as I said during the press conference yesterday, we cannot make any further announcements about 'NX' until next year."

Interestingly enough, Nintendo's refusal to share any details whatsoever has not prevented retailers like EB Games Australia from trying to already snag your pre-order for the NX — whatever it is.
