Nintendo Switch Online service detailed; Prices, Classic Game Library and more

$20 for a year? That's not too bad.

Nintendo has updated their Nintendo Switch Online site with new details on the service’s price and features!

The update has revealed that Nintendo has extended the amount of time that the online service will be available for free. Instead of being free until the Fall, the service will be available for free until the paid online service launches in 2018.

Once the paid online service launch in 2018, users can choose to pay for the monthly service or go without it:

1-Month Membership

  • $3.99 (USD)

3-Month Membership

  • $7.99 (USD)

12-Month Membership

  • $19.99 (USD)

As for the online lobby and voice chat, Nintendo will be launching a full app for mobile devices in 2018 that will allow subscribers to invite friends to play online, set play appointments, and chat with friends. A free limited version of the app will be available with summer.

Confirming to Kotaku, Nintendo detailed that the classic game selection feature has changed. During the reveal, it was stated that Nintendo Switch Online subscribers would have access to one free NES or SNES game that would be playable for a month – however – this feature has changed.

Now, subscribers will have ongoing access to a library of classic games as long as they are subscribed to the online service.

“Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will have ongoing access to a library of classic games with added online play. Users can play as many of the games as they want, as often as they like, as long as they have an active subscription.

“Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will be able to play a wide variety of classic games, including Super Mario Bros. 3, Balloon Fight and Dr. Mario. More games will be announced at a later date. At launch the classic game library will include NES games. Super NES games continue to be under consideration, but we have nothing further to announce at this time.”

There is still no information on the possibility of the Nintendo Switch having a Virtual console.
