No Need for Speed releasing in 2014 to allow for ‘high-quality experience’ in 2015

In stark contrast to its predictably annual history, the Need for Speed franchise will be taking a rest in 2014, EA confirmed at their latest results meeting.

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Wilson said the decision is due to the publisher's plan to launch fewer titles in the 2015 fiscal year, and to instead "focus on delivering top-quality games and services and invest in new experiences."

To that end, developer Ghost Games has been given an extended development window for the next Need for Speed, "to ensure we're delivering a high-quality experience for Need for Speed players next year," Wilson added.

Next year, of course, meaning 2015 is when to expect a next-gen NfS release. In the meantime, EA has big plans to announce at E3, including—wait for it—new IP. We can also expect further details on the direction of Star Wars: Battlefront, which Wilson described as “coming along very, very well.”
