Year over year for November, game sales rose by 9% to a total of 842 million games being sold in the United States according to NPD. The sales were led by Call of Duty: WWII with 4.4 million units sold, while Star Wars Battlefront 2, a game that released around two weeks later, only sold around 882,000 units.
Of course, it should be noted that NPD tracks physical sales, not digital, so these are not the final (or total) number of units sold for either game.
Battlefront 2 saw a huge drop in sales compared to the release of its predecessor in 2015, Star Wars Battlefront, who sold 2.1 million in its first month (including game bundles, again all physical) according to NDP.
Despite the weak launch for Battlefront 2 (which was caused by what has been hailed as predatory microtransactions), the game's sales are expected to bounce back this month.
"We believe that the loyalty of the Star Wars fan base, the game's appeal as a holiday gift, and the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi on December 15th will result in the sales of the game bouncing back," says Wedbush Securities.
Hopefully, we will get a full look at this years game sales for digital and physical when publishers wrap up their annual earnings.
