Oculus has undeniably become a familiar name in the technology industry. Best known for their virtual reality headset, the Oculus Rift, they are focused on making quality VR video games. What some may not know, is that Oculus is also working on VR movies.
The newest facet of their company, Oculus Story Studio, is a team of artists that will be working on Oculus movies. Collectively they hope to make discoveries about storytelling in this brand new medium, and begin to master it. Filmmakers had to learn by trial and error what worked in moving pictures at the beginning of the film industry. Similarly now, VR filmmakers have to find out what works, and doesn’t work, in VR films. There will be setbacks, but there will also be fantastic advances that come out of these learning experiences.
The great thing about Oculus Story Studio is that they plan to share everything about their process with the public. Already their blog mentions five things they learned while making their first VR story, Lost. Oculus Story Studio’s hope is that other VR professionals will learn from their experiments, and that the community as a whole will grow more knowledgeable.
They only have three blog posts, and two videos so far, but you can subscribe on their website to be updated whenever they publish anything further. It’s an exciting time for VR since it’s still a flowering medium, but it will be interesting to see where it goes. Oculus Story Studio hopes to be a big part of that, so keep your eyes peeled for all the things they learn throughout this process.
