Pachter: PS Vita a ‘good value, but too expensive’

The jury is still out on Sony's PlayStation Vita, and while it didn't quite live up to pre-launch expectations, Sony remains content with how it is performing.

While the Sony higher-ups have acknowledged the need for more games from both Sony and third parties, they also remain committed to the current price the Vita sells for. Instead, the company has focused on creating bundles "to give more value" and encourage more consumers to flock to the handheld system.

But the Vita is an attractive device, offering a slew of features and quality games to enjoy on-the-go, there's just one thing industry analysts feel is holding it back: it's price.

"Vita's too expensive for most, priced pretty much the same as the PS3 everywhere," industry analyst Michael Pachter told VG247. "While I think the Vita is a good value and a great device, when compared tot he PS3 it's pretty expensive."

"Also, there is not much of a library of Vita games, so sales will probably be slow until we see more content," he added.

Sony has repeatedly emphasized their commitment to growing the Vita's game library, but while that may take a while, a temporary price cut could help with sales.

Latest sales numbers for the Vita are set to be reported in Sony's Q1 FY12 financial report on August 2. As of February, just a few months after the Vita's worldwide launch, a reported 1.2 million units were sold.
