Phil Fish: ‘FEZ II is cancelled’

Over the weekend, notable indie developer Phil Fish (co-founder of Polytron) announced that he was cancelling development on Fez II. The announcement came while Fish was in the midst of a heated debate on Twitter, though he later clarified that he was not cancelling Fez II "because some boorish f**k said something stupid." Because of that reason (and the fact that Fish's tweets are now private), we will not be posting the argument.

Over on Polytron's website, the company posted the following:

FEZ II is cancelled.
i am done.
i take the money and i run.
this is as much as i can stomach.
this is isn’t the result of any one thing, but the end of a long, bloody campaign.

you win.

An official statement from the Polytron Twitter account read: "It's with a heavy heart that we announced that FEZ II has been cancelled and is no longer in development. We apologize for the disappointment."

Fish later went on to add that he's "doing it to get out of games" and that he's getting out of games "because i choose not to put up with this abuse anymore."

While gamers are notorious for their verbal abuse (especially when hiding behind the protection of their keyboard and internet), it's not like Fish was a saint either. For as brilliant as Fish was as a developer, his abrasive personality and candidness via Twitter often left him in the open to be criticized and hated on by many. I guess enough was enough for the indie developer.
