PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale producer ‘flattered’ by Smash Bros. comparisons

Since Sony first revealed PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale for the PlayStation 3 and Vita, the mascot brawler has drawn a number of comparisons to Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Given their similarities – taking popular characters from the Sony (or Nintendo) franchises and pitting them against each other – the comparisons are rightfully deserved.

Everybody says imitation is the best form of flattery. And clearly Sony is flattering the heck out of Nintendo.

But how does PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale producer Gavin Russell feel about the comparisons to Nintendo's Smash Bros.?

"Our emphasis is on the killsweep: the special move," he began.

"Obviously we know games like Smash Brothers are quite easily drawn into comparison with our title, and to be honest, with a game as successful as that, it's flatter to be placed in the same company," he said.

I never understood why some people feel they can only like one or the other. If both games are fun and play well, why can't people just be fans of both games? Sure, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale may have been inspired by Super Smash Bros., but that doesn't make it any less of a game. Look at how many first-person shooters there are out there. We don't need to pick one of those, right?

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is due out this October 23 for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita. Sony and Superbot Entertainment have revealed 12 characters, but insist they have further information to reveal as a later date.
