Polytron producer Marie-Christine Bourdua found out about Fez 2's cancelation the same way as all of us — through the rapid escalation of a Twitter argument. Company co-founder Phil Fish announced the abrupt end to the game's development over the weekend after an argument with him and Marcus Beer, although Fish maintains that the cancelation had nothing to do with "some boorish f**k" and more to do with him wanting to exit the gaming industry.
Either way, it doesn't look like Polytron will be putting out the sequel and while Marie-Christine Bourdua was initially "shocked" by the sudden announcement, she seems to have come to peace with it. Speaking to Joystiq, she acknowledged that the announcement came as a surprise, as she wasn't even in the studio's home base of Montreal, but admitted that "it's ok."
"It was weird and special to learn it that way," she explained, "but I respect and trust Phil a lot, so that's totally fair that he decided that and he has his reasons."
"We learnt it the same minute you did," added original Fez programmer Renaud Bédard. "The development of Fez 2 is up to him. If he decided [to cancel it] now or he decided it at the end of development, it's easier to cut it out now, than it is to say 'Hey, we've been working on this for years and I'm not feeling able to finish it.' So in that way it just makes more sense."
With all the negativeness surrounding this news, Bourdua pointed out that Polytron has received hundreds of "emails of love."
"I think to make that effort, to write an email, it's very intense. It's personal and we had some very huge emails. A huge part of them are super long and [share their story] with us," she concluded. With Fez 2 canceled, Polytron will now focus its efforts on Linux and Mac versions of the original Fez; although, Bourdua noted that "there's other stuff on the way, too" and that Polytron is currently "working with Sony."
The studio didn't confirm a PS3/Vita version of the original game, but insisted, "announcements are going to come really, really soon." Like maybe at Gamescom where Sony promised a focus on the PS4?
