The PlayStation 3 has reached another milestone. After issuing a statement over a month ago saying the PS3 sold 70 million units worldwide, they announced today that PlayStation 3 sales have reached 30 million units across Europe and the PAL territories. If you're from the US, like I am, then you might not know what PAL is. The PAL region is a television publication territory that covers most of Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and most of Europe. PAL is short for Phase Alternating Line — an analog television color encoding system used in broadcast television systems in many countries. There's your educational lesson for today. #Murica
Back to the PS3!
As of December 17, 2012, the PS3 cumulative sales reached the milestone of 30 million units. President and CEO of SCEE Jim Ryan said in the press release:
This is a major milestone for us and clearly shows just how popular the PlayStation brand and products are within Europe and the PAL territories. We are really pleased with the success of the PS3 system over the last six years, and are committed to continuing our support of the platform with high quality products and titles that are the caliber that PlayStation fans have come to expect.
With more big exclusives set to release in 2013 — like Beyond: Two Souls, The Last of Us and God of War: Ascension — the PS3 has to potential to sell even more units to gamers looking to take the plunge to try out these games. But with an expected PlayStation 4 announcement right around the corner, who knows what could happen.
