The numbers are in, the Nintendo 3DS is technically already the best-selling hardware for February 2015; but let's be honest, there's only one competition gamers really care about — PS4 vs. Xbox One. Those pesky handhelds just get in the way.
Well, I don't know if you can call it a competition really because, once again, the PlayStation 4 has outsold the Xbox One. While the NPD Group's figures didn't reveal specific figures, Sony wasn't bashful in boasting about its success.
“Demand for PlayStation 4 remains incredibly strong in the U.S. as it was No. 1 in hardware-and-software sales in February, according to the latest NPD report,” a Sony spokesperson said in a statement. “PS4 remains the cumulative leader in hardware sales with more than 20.2 million units sold to consumers worldwide demonstrating the fastest growth in PlayStation hardware history.”
It's possible that PS4 sales were aided by the release of The Order: 1886. Despite lackluster reviews, the game was the 9th best-selling title for the month, and was likely a decent system-seller. Prior to the game's release, industry analyst predicted the game could help move one-to-two million PlayStation 4 consoles over the next few months.
If it wasn't The Order: 1886, then I really don't know what's pushing PS4 sales ahead of the Xbox One. It's definitely debatable, but I personally feel the Xbox One, at this point, has better exclusives. Both sides have offered decent bundles, but it's hard to beat Microsoft's discounts. Whatever the case, maybe it's still bitterness towards the initial Xbox One reveal, people are still flocking to Sony.
February's sales mean the PS4 has now claimed success over the Xbox One for the first two months of 2015, after giving up the top spot for November and December 2014.
