PS4 patch delays means no cross-platform play for PlanetSide 2

Sony Online Entertainment has confirmed that PlanetSide 2 will not have cross-platform play between the PlayStation 4 and PC due to the patching process on the PS4. Speaking to Eurogamer, PlanetSide 2 creative director Matt Higby cited the "additional steps" the developers have to go through to patch on Sony's new console, compared to the relative ease of patching on PC.

"Because of the update cadence, and the additional steps you have to go through to be able to release an update on the PlayStation network, we're not going to be able to keep our servers in sync, so you won't be able to just play with the same people," Higby told Eurogamer. "They might be a week behind in terms of patching, or a day behind or whatever it ends up being, and we can't really have that."

Although players from both platforms won't be able to play with one another, Higby did say the studio is looking into "character portability" for the game. If successful, players will be able to transfer their character from the PC version (which launched last November) to the PS4 version which is set to release later this year, and vice versa. He explained that as character format's are the same for both platforms, "it's just purely a matter of the server updates."

Patching on consoles has always been a difficult process for developers. Though consoles are slowly starting to speed up the process, it's still not as quick as PC. Do you plan on playing PlanetSide 2 on PS4 when it releases?
