Ahead of this week's NPD Group report of November's U.S. retail sales, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter — known for his video game expertise — has given the edge to Sony's PS4 over Microsoft's Xbox One. In a preview note sent to investors, Pachter estimated that the PS4 sold about 500,000 more consoles than the Xbox One in the United States during November.
"We expect hardware sales of 1.25 million PS4 units and 750,000 Xbox One units in their debut month," Pachter said in a preview note sent to investors.
Sony recently announced that the PlayStation 4, which launched in mid-November in the United States has sold over 2.1 million consoles worldwide as of December 1. Over one million consoles were sold within the first 24 hours of its U.S. launch alone.
Microsoft has yet to reveal specific numbers but has said the Xbox One is experiencing "record breaking sales." Take that for what it's worth.
The NPD Group's report should be published later this week at which point we can finallys top the back and forth bickering over which console will sell better. Even then, the figures will represent just the initial launch phase. As we learned with the Xbox 360 and PS3, there's still a loooooong way to go.
