PS4 sales top 18.5 million units worldwide

Nearly 11 million PS Plus subscribers

Sony announced yesterday that it sold 4.1 million PlayStation 4 consoles during the holiday shopping season, bringing the total number of lifetime sales to more than 18.5 million worldwide.

Sony isn't just selling systems, though. They're also selling PlayStation Plus, a monthly membership that allows PS4 owners to play games online, as well as provide free games and steep discounts. According to Sony, 10.9 million people have subscribed to PS Plus, a pretty impressive feat considering the ongoing problems Sony has faced with PlayStation Network.

PlayStation 4 outsold Xbox One every month for nearly an entire year straight. Microsoft hasn't revealed the latest Xbox One lifetime sales, but did announce that it became the best-selling console in the U.S. for the month of November 2014.

Looking ahead, Sony has a number of promising PS4 exclusives releasing this year, including Bloodborne, The Order: 1886, and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. If 18.5 million PS4s could be sold with a relatively weak lineup, imagine the potential once the system starts getting must-have games.
