A new system update for the PlayStation 4 (firmware v1.61) has been released — at least in Europe. And according to PlayStation Europe community Chris Owen, it is mandatory. Upon booting up your PS4 you should be notified of the download, or you can opt to install it via USB.
#PS4 firmware v1.61 is now live (mandatory) and provides general enhancements to the PS4 system’s stability.

The official update notes posted to Sony's website didn't offer much more detail.
"System software stability during use of some features has been improved," the very brief notes reveal. Getting a little more into specifics, Owen called it "a very minor update fixing mainly back end stuff."
Minor or not, the update is mandatory so go download it.
