Red Dead Redemption 2 has biggest entertainment opening weekend ever

Rockstar Games is no stranger to record-breaking releases with each GTA release being a cultural event and GTA V making a whopping $1 billion in just three days. Now, Rockstar’s critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2 joins the ranks with a staggering opening weekend of $725 million in sales.

From Friday to Sunday, Rockstar accumulated the biggest entertainment opening weekend of all-time beating out Avatar and any Star Wars or Marvel film. Granted, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a $60 game with some special editions that price it up to $100 and not a $10 – $15 movie ticket but the point still stands, it’s massive. Rockstar’s western epic is the second biggest general three-day launch falling behind 2013’s Grand Theft Auto V.

To compare, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 had a $500 million dollar opening weekend earlier this month across Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Red Dead Redemption 2 is currently a single-player only experience (with online to follow this November) only on Xbox One and PS4. Red Dead Redemption 2 also quickly became the most well-reviewed game on both Xbox One and PS4 on review aggregate Metacritic last week.

Biggest opening weekend in retail sell-through across all entertainment releases;

Second biggest launch (three days) in retail sell-through across all entertainment releases;

Biggest entertainment launch of 2018;

Most pre-ordered full game ever on PlayStation Network;

Biggest day one full game sales ever on PlayStation Network;

Biggest first three day full game sales ever on PlayStation Network.

It’s only a matter of time before the game rides towards a sweet billion dollars in sales. If we had to make a prediction, Red Dead Redemption 2 will likely be 2018’s best selling game despite launching in the final months of the year and being in a year of big hitters like God of War, Spider-Man, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and many more.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is out now on Xbox One and PS4, a PC version has been heavily rumored to be on the way following data found within the game’s companion app. You can read our glowing 10/10 review by clicking here.
