French games publisher Microïds has announced their plans to remake the iconic 2003 first-person-shooter XIII. Developed by PlayMagic, the remake is set to come out not too far off, this November 13 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Check out the teaser trailer!
The original XIII released a felt lifetime ago in 2003, during the height of the PlayStation 2. Back then, the game adaptation of the graphic novel by the same name was a visionary title with its unique cel shaded style and great blend of classic comic aesthetics all together with iconic written sound effects . Still, the game didn’t get a sequel and remained a cult classic among fans of the shooter genre.
Play as «Thirteen», a talented soldier who lost his memory and has been accused of killing the President of the United States. You wake up injured and amnesic on Brighton Beach with the only clue being a small key and a mysterious tattoo « XIII » next to your clavicle. It’s now your job to search for answers in the 34 levels of the solo campaign. Don’t worry, you will find the appropriate weapon arsenal along the way.
Even worse, since the game was based on an existing license, it ended up in legal jumbo and never made its way onto digital stores which renders the classic title extremely difficult to get a hand of for years now. Many a retro gamer was hoping that the nice people over GOG would somehow bring back XIII onto their nostalgia-filled store but with the announcement now, they’re in for an even more unexpected nice surprise.
Cel shading naturally lends itself well for timeless consumption but getting a full-on remake is even better. Developer PlayMagic is promising a true re-envisioning by modernizing the graphics, sound and animations. Even better, the XIII remake is coming for virtually every gaming system available at the moment and with a release date of November 13 the wait won’t be that long.
