If you've been on the internet today, you may have read some headlines claiming that Microsoft had pulled yet another 180, nixing plans to add dev kit functionality from retail Xbox One consoles. Responding to those rumors, Microsoft has called the reports "inaccurate."
In a statement to Kotaku, Microsoft said the following:
The comments today were inaccurate. We remain committed to ensuring the best possible solution for developers and hobbyists to create games for Xbox One. We will share more details at a later date.
Microsoft last year promised that each Xbox One purchased at retail could double as a video game development kit, allowing you to both play and make games. Microsoft has yet to actually implement the feature though, and I guess somewhere along the lines a rumor was started.
As reported by Digital Spy and numerous other websites, it was said that Microsoft had reversed course and would no longer allow Xbox Ones to function as development kits. "As far as I'm aware there are no plans. I'm not aware of the reason why we didn't manage to do that," Microsoft's Martin Fuller reportedly said.
So, those comments were inaccurate? It's possible that Microsoft's plan may have shifted, which could explain their "more details at a later date" response.
