In what could be the weirdest Resident Evil spin-off we've seen yet, Capcom announced today at Sony's Tokyo Game Umbrella Corps, a "fast-paced" online competitive third person shooter.
Umbrella Corpse is set in the Resident Evil universe, featuring "quick, intense matches in compact battle zones themed from historic Resident Evil environments." Story appears to be taking a backseat in this one, with Capcom providing just enough to justify the "high-intensity team-based matches."
"Umbrella Corporation, a ruthless international pharmaceutical company, had been known for its genetic experiments and biological weaponry that led to worldwide devastation including the infamous Raccoon City incident . Although the organization was brought down in 2003, its legacy of bio-terrorism continued. In the present day, corporations with nebulous interests in bio-weaponry have hired squads of special forces for experimental battles in restricted virus-infected areas against other mercenaries."
Umbrella Corps will offer a number of unique close quarter battle modes, each designed "for quick and engaging play." Gameplay will feature analog aim and a cover system, while players will be equipped with gun and grenade based weaponry as well as specialized gear and a non-traditional arsenal that includes the Brainer (a powerful melee axe which goes straight into the skull), Tactical Shield (an arm-mounted guard allowing players to utilize a zombie as cover), Terrain Spikes (boot-mounted spikes for trampling the enemy), and Zombie Jammer (a device which repels zombies only when active).
While many of the modes remain a mystery, Capcom did detail the "One Life Match" mode. In this mode, you must achieve your main objective to take down the other team without any option to respawn. Not only will players encounter the enemy team, but classic Resident Evil enemies will also populate the map, serving as added threats or strategic advantages of played properly.
Umbrella Corps will be available for PS4 and PC in early 2016 for $29.99. Fans in attendance at Tokyo Game Show can go hands-on with Umbrella Corps in a 3v3 setup of the One Life Match mode.
