After countless rumors, leaks, and one of the longest breaks the annually released franchise ever took, Assassin’s Creed Origins will be making its official release tomorrow. Ahead of its release, reviews for Assassin’s Creed Origins have begun making their way online.
It should be noted that a majority of outlets were invited to San Francisco to play Origins on an Xbox One X console by Ubisoft and have based their review on that. In fact, all of the major outlets below have their reviews based on the Xbox One X version of the game.
Our review, which will be coming at a later time as we did not have the luxury of attending the event, will not be based on the Xbox One X version of the game. The summary of our review will be linked and edited into this round up when it is finished.
Overall, Assassin’s Creed Origins is a worthy installation in the franchise. There are bugs, which is common with any open-world game, but the gameplay appears to be of decent quality. Most reviews claim it is one of the best installments in the series.
Assassin’s Creed Origins is set to release on tomorrow, October 27th, on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. OpenCritic is currently sitting at 85/100. Check out a roundup of reviews below:

Assassin’s Creed: Origins is truly unique compared to its predecessors, though as an Action RPG, it replicates many of the same mechanics you will find in its contemporaries. Regardless, it is a lovingly crafted world worth exploring.
IGN 9/10 XBOX ONE X
Assassin’s Creed Origins is a deep-dive into a truly stunning realization of ancient Egypt, with a rich series of cultures, genuine characters, and more mission variety than any other game in the series. The combat is challenging and thoughtful, and while the loot system doesn’t match up to games like Destiny 2, there are enough different weapon types and enough enemy variety to keep you swapping between weapons, catered to the situation. The RPG elements encourage challenges of their own, and even despite a handful of bugs, I desperately wanted to keep playing.

Assassin’s Creed returns with an entry that moves the series forward, but also goes back to the beginning of the Brotherhood. This new entry is a bit more of an action RPG, telling the story of how Bayek of Siwa becomes the first Assassin alongside a number of intriguing side quests. Combat is overhauled, but it’s still a bit muddy when fighting multiple enemies. What absolutely does work is the world itself; Egypt is beautiful and the diversity in the environments is impressive. I’m unsure if Assassin’s Creed Origins will convert anyone who isn’t already a fan of the series, but it does what it does well enough to join the top of the franchise.

After the story ended and the credits rolled (roughly 30 hours), I found myself looking over the map and still having tons of interesting side quests to do and 15 untouched areas to explore. I really appreciate how much there is to do in the game. Assasin’s Creed: Origins has worthwhile mechanics and a serviceable story, that when placed inside of the expansive and beautifully detailed setting of Ancient Egypt, work together to provide a genuinely fun gaming experience.
Assassin’s Creed: Origins may not be as revolutionary of a release in the open-world, action adventure RPG genre as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but it does provide an expansive single-player experience, filled with hours of memorable content without having to purchase anything extra. Assassin’s Creed: Origins is the most memorable entry in the series in years, answering age-old questions like “why are assassins missing their ring fingers?” and is an excellent game to start with if you’re a newcomer. While the story wasn’t consistent in quality throughout the entire game — and I didn’t know what was going on or what the stakes were at times — it culminates in a payoff that any fan of the Assassin’s Creed franchise will nerd out about for a long time.
Polygon 8.5/10 XBOX ONE X
In essence, Assassin’s Creed Origins is much the same game as the original Assassin’s Creed, which came out a decade ago. It’s a formula that people like to play, and it’s certainly been honed and improved over the years. Origins is, then, undoubtedly the best iteration of this formula yet. But I yearn for a fresh approach and new ideas, something that astounds the senses as much as the wondrous world this game inhabits.
GameSpot 7/10 XBOX ONE X
While Assassin’s Creed Origins reaches great heights in this new setting, it routinely runs into issues that bog down the overall experience. Technical issues make for an inconsistent experience and its new gameplay pillars wobble under the weight of its systems. But despite this, the world of Origins remains fresh and exciting to explore, which is a testament to the remarkable setting and compelling story. Assassin’s Creed has undergone many changes in its long and storied history, and Origins feels like the first step in the start of a new journey. It has its fair share of problems, but the vision for its future is one worth pursuing.
