Rumor: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 may release on PS5 in 2021

2018 brought us the release of what is undoubtedly the best superhero game since the Batman: Arkham series. Marvel’s Spider-Man garnered high praise with critical acclaim, a Game of the Year nomination, and commercial success. With many loose ends still in the webhead’s story, a sequel was almost guaranteed out the gate.

While nothing has been officially confirmed, Insomniac is more than likely hard at work on the sequel as we speak. Kinda Funny Gamescast host and former Game Informer editor Imran Khan spoke about the sequel’s existence.

“I know too much about this, so I can’t speculate too much. I think a Spider-Man 2 will come sooner than we think,” said Khan. He went on to mention that he believes a holiday 2021 release seems likely.

This does sound pretty practical. After all, Sony just bought developer Insomniac Games back in August and is shepherding them as one of their A-team players now. When Sony was showing off the tech for the PlayStation 5 earlier this year, they used the first Spider-Man game as a showcase. The tech allowed the game to perform much better with super-fast load times and other noticeable improvements.

We also have to imagine that Spider-Man 2 will still take place in New York City and unless they allow you to visit other islands, the core map is already completed. There’s not much you can do to radically shake-up the big apple that would require you to make it all over again.

A three-year turnaround for a studio like Insomniac Games also doesn’t seem like a hard task either. Sony doesn’t typically like to release their big hitters after November as they like to meet the cut-off date for awards consideration at The Game Awards, so if we had to guess, we’ll likely see this bad boy released by October/November 2021.

Of course, internal delays can happen at a moment’s notice as well. The Last of Us Part 2 got a release date back in September and just a couple weeks later, the team delayed its release date by roughly 3 months.

We’ll likely hear more about Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 whenever Sony reveals the PlayStation 5 in its full form or at E3 2020. The PlayStation 5 is officially scheduled for release during the 2020 holiday season.
