Marcus Sellars, an industry insider, along with a number of other sources, have taken to Twitter claiming that a brand new Zelda title is coming to the 3DS. The even more surprising part is that if the rumor is true, it’s planned for release this year.
According to these same sources, Grezzo is handling development of the new title. They’ve worked on previous Zelda titles on 3DS such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, and A Link Between World.
According to a user on Reddit, the game is supposed to be a title heavily inspired by Link’s Awakening much like A Link Between Worlds was heavily inspired by (and was a loose sequel of) A Link To The Past. Here are some details:
- The game was suppose to come out this year, but due to the focus on BoTW and the DLC it was delayed to next year to change the gameplay to a more ‘open’ approach.
- The game is being developed by Grezzo, the guys behind A Link Between Worlds and Tri-force Heroes.(They release a zelda game every 2nd year)
- It will be inspired heavily by Link’s Awakening, Many will consider it a remake but it will also be inspired by BoTW and past games.
- There will be a N2DS bundle.
- Release is around Q2. Possibly early Q3.
- The game will be revealed very soon.
In a discussion with VGCultureHQ, Sellars gave some clarification:
“It’ll come out within the first 6 months of this year. The team behind it is very experienced at handling remasters and Zelda titles. They have worked on Majora’s Mask 3DS, A Link Between Worlds, and many others.“
If this turns out to be official down the line, that’s Nintendo putting their money where their mouth is on their claim that the 3DS is not dead, and is in fact, alive and well.
While the rumor doesn’t have the usual bits of proof behind as many others in the past, it does seem par for the course, as Grezzo has released a Zelda title every off-year for the past few releases.
